CONCENTRATION Players: 2-4 Concept Taught: addition of fractions/equivalent fractions Materials Needed: fraction cards * Place all cards face down in an array of rows and columns. * The object is to find two fractions whose sum is one. * When it is a player's turn, he turns over two cards face up so that all players can see the cards. If the sum of the fraction is NOT one, then his turn is over, and the cards are returned to the same places in the array face down. If the sum of the fractions is 1, he keeps these cards, and he may continue to draw two cards at a time until the fractions do not total 1. * After all the cards have been used, the player with the most cards is the winner. Variation: Find pairs of equal (equivalent) fractions. ----------------------------- FLIP Players: 2-4 Concept Taught: equality, inequality of fractions Materials Needed: fraction cards * The cards are dealt to the players so that each player has the same number of cards. Each player places his cards in a stack face down. * The players flip over their top cards and the cards are compared. The player with the greatest fraction wins the cards that have been flipped. If the displayed cards are equal, each player flips over four cards from his stack, repeating the letters F-L-I-P. * The player having the greatest fraction on the last cards wins all the cards that have been flipped. When a player's stack is gone, he forms a new stack from the cards he has won. * The first player to get all the cards is the winner. ----------------------------- FRACTION BLACK JACK Players: 2-4 Concept Taught: addition of fractions Materials Needed: fraction cards * Spread the fraction cards face down like is done for the game 'Fish'. * The object is to use one or more cards to get a sum of fractions which is less than or equal to two. * Each player takes cards one at a time. After taking all the cards he wants, he says "I'm holding". * After every player has said "I'm holding", the players show their cards. * The player with the greatest sum which is less than or equal to 2 wins two points. * The first player to get eight points is the winner. Variation: The player with the greatest sum which is less than or equal to 3 wins three points. The first player to get twelve points is the winner. ----------------------------- FRACTION RUMMY Players: 2-4 Concept Taught: equality, inequality of fractions Materials Needed: fraction cards * Each player is dealt seven fraction cards, which he holds so that the other players cannot see his fractions. * One card is turned face up to form the beginning of a Discard Stack. The remaining cards are placed face down in the Playing Stack. * On his turn, a
player takes one card from either the Discard or Playing Stack, and
the may play as follows: * A player ends each of his turns by placing a card face up on the Discard Stack. * The first player to lay down all of his cards ends the game. * Each player gets one point for each card he has laid down. He loses one point for each card left in his hand. examples of scoring: * Al ended the game by laying down these seven cards: 3 equal fractions (1/2, 6/12, 2/4) and 4 consecutive twelfths (6/12, 1/2, 7/12, 2/3). He scored seven points. * Greg laid down 5 consecutive twelfth (1/6, 1/4, 1/3, 5/12, 3/6) and had two cards left in has hand. He scored three points. ----------------------------- FRIO (Fractions In Order) Players: 2-4 Concept Taught: ordering fractions Materials Needed: fraction cards * Each player is dealt five cards in a row face up. The cards should be left in the order they are dealt and not moved around. The remaining cards are placed in a stack face down. * The object is to get five fractions in order from smallest to greatest or from greatest to smallest by the following method. * Each player on his turn takes a card from the deck. He may use this card to replace any of his five cards if it helps him to get five fractions in order. If a player does not wish to use his card, he puts it aside. * The first player
to get five fractions in order wins the game. |
